Removing the garden tub and turning that entire corner into one large tiled walk-in shower is far and away the most requested bathroom project in Brandon, Valrico, and Riverview — and it is the right call for most households. You gain real usable space, you lose a fixture you were not using, and the room stops looking like it was built in 1994.
What the Conversion Actually Requires
- Demolition of the tub deck and the framed platform under it
- Relocating the drain, which on a slab home means either cutting the slab or working within the existing waste location
- New sloped substrate and a full waterproofing membrane, flood-tested before tile
- Framing and blocking for a bench, a niche, and any future grab bars
- New valve and rough plumbing, and often a larger supply line for a rain head plus a handheld
- Frameless glass, measured after tile is set rather than before
Keep One Tub in the House
Honest advice that costs us money: if the master is the only tub in the home and you may sell within a decade, keep a tub somewhere. Buyers with small children screen for it. Usually the answer is converting the master to a full walk-in shower and keeping a tub-shower combination in the hall bath, which is generally the cheaper room to renovate anyway.
Height, Storage, and Lighting
The other three quick wins in these houses are raising the vanity from thirty inches to comfort height, replacing the cultured marble top and integrated bowls with quartz and undermount sinks, and getting rid of the single builder light bar. Framing the existing sheet mirror or replacing it with two mirrors over a double vanity changes the room for very little money.

Brandon, Valrico, and most of Riverview are unincorporated Hillsborough County, so plumbing and electrical permits are pulled through the county.
