Plaster and wood lath does not come off in sheets, and behind it you routinely find cloth-wrapped wiring, galvanized supply lines that have silted down to a pencil-width opening, and cast iron drain stacks at the end of their life. We price for the discovery. If we open a wall and the drain line is scaled shut, replacing it is a change we discuss with you before we touch it — not a surprise on the final invoice.
